    Canadian arctic photographer Bruemmer writes about his early life He grew up in Latvia as part of the ethnic German community In 1939 Germans were forced out as the Soviet Union took control of the Baltic countries His parents were shot by Soviet soldiers and he was separated from his sister At age 14 he was put in a prison camp and worked in the coal mines of Ukraine, escaped from there only to be reimprisoned in a chemical factory He survived horrible conditions, typhus, starvation the whole deal by learning to steal and scrounge In 1947 he was repatriated to his homeland Germany and eventually made it to Canada where he first worked in the gold mines of northern Ontario As usual with this kind of memoir you take the author at his word there not being anyone around to corroborate the facts But I have a niggling doubt about some of his adventures The trip to Dresden in 1947 did he really go He had no reason to travel there other than the sermon he delive...
